The Electoral college

In my last blog post, I said that the only reason Trump won was the electoral college. A candidate doesn’t have to get the most votes, only the most electors. A candidate schedules most of their campaigning and spends the most time and money in states with the most electors. Most federal elections are decided in the east well before the polls close in the west. The media tries not to indicate who won but the fact remains, winners are decided well before many have voted.

I got several comments and many made sense, but there was one that commented that then we would have New York and California electing the president.

In the 2016 election there were 135,500,034 votes cast nationwide.

In New York there were 7,046,175 votes cast. Of those votes 4,143,874 went to Hillary, 2,640,570 went to Trump and 261,731 went to down-ballot candidates.

In California there were 11, 954,317 votes cast. Of those votes 7,362,490 went to Hillary, 3,916,209 went to trump and 675,618 went to down-ballot candidates.

The total votes cast between the two states comes to 19,676,924. Subtract that from 135,500,034 and that leaves 115,823,924 or approximately 80% of the voting is done in the other 48 states. There is no way California and New York could elect the president.

One other thing, I saw a post that declared that those who wanted to get rid of the electoral college are far left. Nothing could be further from the truth. I am not far left. In fact, I am more of a centrist. I believe the country does best just a little left of center and with compromise. Republicans have taken both from us.
